THE GATE HOTEL Kaminarimon

The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon View Tokyo Skytree

THE GATE HOTEL Kaminarimon is a hotel ideally located in the heart of Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district. I stayed there during my trip across Japan for several days and enjoyed everything this hotel has to offer.

After a few days of sightseeing in Yokohama, I headed back to Tokyo, more specifically to Asakusa. Unfortunately, it was the day after the big typhoon hit the area and the majority of trains were not operating as they should. I was so relieved when I finally arrived to Asakusa and discovered that the hotel is located extremely close to the subway station. After exiting the station I had to follow the main street and, after a few minutes, I reached the entrance to the hotel.

The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon Building

THE GATE HOTEL Kaminarimon, as its name says, is located close to Kaminarimon, or Thunder Gate in Japanese. This is a part of the complex that contains the Sensoji temple, and it’s probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Tokyo. There you can buy many souvenirs, rent a kimono, witness ceremonies and enjoy historic Japanese architecture such as the temple and the nearby pagoda. The whole neighborhood is quite cosy and has many small shops, bars, and restaurants. I especially enjoyed wandering around sunset and trying delicious Japanese food. I also suggest that you check out the Hoppy Street if you want to drink and eat with the locals. There are a lot of people hanging out even in the afternoon of a weekday. Thanks to all of this, Asakusa is a great place for people who want to catch a glimpse of old Tokyo and have the chance to go out on a fun night in the neighborhood as well. That is why I decided to visit this place and to book a stay at THE GATE HOTEL Kaminarimon.

The hotel itself is a beautiful, tall, slender building, recognisable by its golden logo in the shape of kanji for “gate”, 門 (mon), so it’s not hard to find it when you’re walking down the street. The lobby is located on the 13th floor, so when I arrived I had to take the elevator up there. Lobby area has huge windows on one side of the building and offers a spectacular view of Kaminarimon area. Since I was a bit late, the room was ready for my arrival and the check in procedure was completed relatively quickly by the experienced staff. I was given a quick introduction to the hotel, its facilities and rules, and then went to my room to finally rest from the trip.

The room in which I stayed was an Essential Twin room located on the 9th floor of the hotel. As the name of the room might suggest, it had all the essential things I could possibly need in a hotel room and was quite comfortable. I really enjoyed the spacious bathroom which had two separate areas, one for the toilet and sink, and another room which was entirely a shower. I really loved that I had so much space in the shower, so this feature is a big plus for me. The bed was very comfortable and appropriate in size. Even though I’m taller than average person I had no problem fitting in the bed.

The view from my room was great, I could see several parts of Asakusa and many surrounding buildings, but the thing that dominated the view was the amazing Tokyo Skytree, for which I’m sure you already heard many times before. Keep in mind that this view was from our room specificly and I cannot guarantee that your room will have the same view. So if you want to enjoy this view yourself, make sure to book the right room. The room had everything you would expect from a hotel such as this one; a refrigerator, large flat screen TV, electric pot, espresso machine, safe box, hair dryer, and of course free Wi-Fi, which is probably the most essential thing for me. It also included amenities such as towels, nightwear, and many toiletries. All in all, I can say that I was very satisfied with the room, especially considering how affordable the room is compared to similar accommodation in the rest of the Tokyo.

After I relaxed in the room a bit and took a shower, I went to explore the surrounding area. In the evening I visited the “B Bar” located on the top of the hotel and drank some nice champagne. This classy bar is a private space exclusively for guests staying at the hotel and it offers a spectacular view of the whole Asakusa and the surrounding area. You can see many landmarks such as the Tokyo Skytree, Senso-ji temple, Asahi beer hall and others.
Next morning I went to the “R Restaurant & Bar” located on the 13th floor to get breakfast. The restaurant offers Western style cuisine with select ingredients and quality liquor from around the world. It is open for everyone from 6:30 in the morning to midnight, but the guests of the hotel are welcome there 24 hours a day. For the staying guests of the hotel the price is 2,200 JPY which is quite affordable for such a nice breakfast. Similar to the bar located on the top of the hotel, this restaurant also has a great view of the area and a nice terrace. I just loved eating my breakfast while enjoying the view of the mighty Skytree rising above the rest of the buildings. As I arrived at the restaurant and sat at my table, a staff member brought me some coffee and asked me what I would like to have as my main meal. Since I am a huge fan of French toast, I ordered it along with ham and maple syrup. From the buffet I also took some vegetables, potatoes, croissants, and some freshly squeezed orange juice. The breakfast cereals were so good, as well as honey. I recommend you to combine them for a delicious and tasty breakfast meal.

After eating breakfast, I was full of energy and ready to explore the rest of us Asakusa. I just wandered the streets for a few hours exploring everything that interested me. Later I took a short subway ride to the nearby Ueno and did some sightseeing there. I love that the hotel is located so close to the subway station and that it is so well connected to many parts of Tokyo.

THE GATE HOTEL Kaminarimon is definitely a good place to stay if you are planning on visiting Asakusa and this part of Tokyo in general. It is a comfortable and affordable hotel that will fulfill all of your needs. I recommend that you check out their website to learn more about the things they have to offer you. If you like what you see, then definitely book a stay there!

    1. I would give it 10/10. The area was amazing. Senso-ji Temple, as well as the SkyTree are really close to the hotel. Other than that, there are many restaurants, shops, things to do and see. I am sure you will be satisfied with this place!
